Ridge, hip and verge repairs
Loose ridge tiles, mortar falling out of the verges and hips that have lost their grip, repointed or fixed for good with dry ridge and dry verge systems.
Ridge, hip and verge repairs
The ridge along the top of your roof, the hips down the corners and the verges at the gable ends take the full force of the wind. On many houses they were bedded in mortar, and over the years that mortar cracks, shrinks and falls out. Then tiles work loose, and in a storm they can come off.
We re-bed and repoint ridges, hips and verges in mortar where that suits the roof, or replace them with dry fix systems that are mechanically fixed and don't rely on mortar at all.
Signs your ridge or verge needs work
- Lumps of mortar on the drive, lawn or in the gutter
- Ridge tiles that look uneven or have gaps underneath
- Gaps at the gable ends where the verge mortar has gone
- A ridge tile that's come off in the wind
- Leaks near the top of the roof or at a gable end
- Birds getting in under the ridge or verge

Mortar or dry fix?
Mortar bedding can look right on older and period roofs, and is sometimes needed in conservation areas. Dry ridge and dry verge systems use clips, caps and fixings instead, so there's nothing to crack and fall out, and very little maintenance. Many newer homes were built with them. We'll recommend what suits your roof.
Today's fixing standards
Current British Standards for slating and tiling require ridge, hip and verge tiles to be mechanically fixed, not held on by mortar alone. When we re-bed ridges in mortar, they're mechanically fixed as well. It's one of the reasons modern repairs last longer than the originals.
Roof ventilation
A dry ridge can also ventilate the roof space at the top, which helps stop condensation in the loft. If your loft is damp or your roof has been re-felted with a non-breathable felt, it's worth asking about.
Prices
What affects the price
Every roof is different, so we don't put prices on a website and then add extras later. Lee looks at your roof and gives you a written quote, free, with everything included.

Checkatrade reviews
What customers say about our ridge & verge work
- ★★★★★10/10
"Lee came out the same day that I made the request and explained what was needed to be done. Agreed for the work to go ahead and it was completed the following day. The work involved replacing a broken tile; work on the ridge tiles and solving an issue of a noise in the roof that other contractors had not solved. Work carried out professionally and would use company again."
- ★★★★★9.67/10
"The old timber soffit on a 1970s semi needed replacing and the edge tiles re-seating and re-sealing. Leigh's team arrived on time and did a good job, leaving the site clean and tidy."
- ★★★★★10/10
"Needed a new roof membrane installed as the old felt one had disintegrated. Leigh and his team did a great job in resolving this with new batons and dry ridge system, removed our old chimney and replaced our old tiles without damage. Great team and a good clean up after."

FAQs
Ridge & verge: your questions

What is a dry ridge system?
A way of fixing ridge tiles with clips, fixings and a ventilated roll instead of mortar. Nothing cracks or falls out, so it needs very little maintenance.
Are dry ridge systems better than mortar?
For most modern roofs, yes: they're mechanically fixed and low maintenance. Mortar can suit older and period roofs better. We'll recommend the right one.
Why is mortar falling off my roof?
Ridge and verge mortar cracks and shrinks with frost and movement over the years. Once it loosens, the tiles it holds can work free, so it's worth getting looked at.
Can you repoint just a few ridge tiles?
Yes, if the rest are sound. We'll check the whole ridge so you know whether a few tiles or the full run need attention.
